EBU censors Malta's Eurovision 2025 song "Kant"
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has decided that the word "Kant" must be removed from the Maltese song's title and lyrics
Miriana Conte won MESC 2025 with the song "Kant" just a month ago. But she will not be singing the winning version of her song on the Eurovision stage in Basel.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has mandated changes to Malta’s Eurovision 2025 song, "Kant," performed by Miriana Conte due to concerns over its title's pronunciation. While "Kant" means "singing" in Maltese, its pronunciation closely resembles an offensive English term leading to potential misunderstandings.
Initially, the EBU had approved the song in its original form. However, following a report from an EBU member believed to be the BBC, the EBU reversed its decision instructing that the word "Kant" be removed from both the title and lyrics.
Miriana Conte expressed her disappointment on Instagram stating, "While I’m shocked and disappointed, especially since we have less than a week to submit the song, I promise you this: the show will go on — Diva NOT down."
Malta’s national broadcaster, PBS, is currently assessing how to respond to this directive with the final submission deadline set for 10 March.
Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest
Malta debuted in Eurovision back in 1971, and has participated in the contest 36 times since then – without any victories.
Their best results are two runners-up finishes in 2002 (Ira Losco - "7th Wonder") and 2005 (Chiara - "Angel"). They came last in 1971, 1972 and 2006 and in their Semi-finals in 2023 and 2024.
Since the introduction of the Semi-finals in 2004, Malta has qualified for the Grand Final 10 out of 20 times.
