German Selection Process

This year the German broadcaster NDR, opted for an internal selection for both the artist and song. Two types of juries helped in the process this year. First being a jury panel that included 20 music professionals from the industry whilst a 100 people expert jury panel was chosen with varies music taste and knowledge.

The juries had a job witling the song and artist combinations in different phases until 20 artists were left in the final process before choosing the right song and artist. Recently, the Head of Delegation for Germany, Alexandra Wolfslast, revealed that the German song had nearly full support from all the juries. It was stated that the song chosen had an average rating of 11.82 from 12 proints.

Jendrik Sigwart

Jendrik grew up in Hamburg as the second eldest of 4 siblings. He began to play piano and violin at a young age and after finishing high school, he studied musical theatre at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. He has been passionately writing his own songs for years and even writes his own songs for the ukulele too, his favourite musical instrument.

Last summer, he couldn’t perform his music due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus, so he used the time to write a song and produce the music video for it. He humorously posted its creation on TikTok and Instagram under the motto: “How to make a Musikvideo”.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) has been his dream for a very long time so in each of these small, creative films, he articulated his wish to be able to compete in the Contest. Although the talented musician dreamed of becoming Germany’s candidate with his first self-produced song, he didn’t really think he would succeed.

Germany in Eurovision Song Contest

Germany 2018: Michael Schulte - "You Let Me Walk Alone"

Germany is a grand old country in the Eurovision Song Contest. They have participated 63 times since the beginning of ESC in 1956. The only year Germany didn't participate was in 1996. Prior to the competition in 1996, 30 countries had signed up for participation, so EBU had to make a selection. Judges from the countries made a secret voting, where the 22 best qualified. During this voting, the judges only listen to but didn't watch the contestants. This turned out to be highly unpopular, and it was also the only time this method was used. The result of the voting was that Germany was ruled out. This was the first and only time Germany didn't participate in Eurovision Song Contest.
