Jendrik Sigwart will represent Germany in Eurovision 2021

The German National Broadcaster confirms the artist for Eurovision 2021 and will give Jendrik Sigwart the chance to represent Germany

After a disappointing result in 2019, the German national broadcaster decided to internally select the 2020 representative who was Ben Dolic. He was set to represent the nation in Rotterdam with the song "Violent Thing" however this was not the case since the contest cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the past few months, German Head of Delegation, Alexandra Wolfslast announced that another internal selection would be held for the 2021 song however no guarantee was given to Ben Dolic.

After an internal process was made during the past few months it is now confirmed. Jendrik Sigwart will sing for Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. Since Germany forms part of the Big-5 group, they are given a direct pass to the final. This has been announced on Instagram by the artist himself:

– I am really looking forward to performing for Germany at the Contest. Okay – I just can’t stay serious about this. Hey, everyone! I am really going to the Eurovision Song Contest! This is a dream come true. Amazing!

The premiere of the German song for this year will be broadcast on Thursday 25 February at 17:50 CET and at 19:56 on the ARD public television channel.

Germany's Head of Delegation, Alexandra Wolfslast confirmed the news by stating:

– Jendrik is totally authentic, has fantastic charisma and incredible entertainment qualities. It was not surprising that he convinced the ESC Juries. We are very happy that he will be representing Germany.

Jendrik Sigwart

Jendrik grew up in Hamburg as the second eldest of 4 siblings. He began to play piano and violin at a young age and after finishing high school, he studied musical theatre at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. He has been passionately writing his own songs for years and even writes his own songs for the ukulele too, his favourite musical instrument.

Last summer, he couldn’t perform his music due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus, so he used the time to write a song and produce the music video for it. He humorously posted its creation on TikTok and Instagram under the motto: “How to make a Musikvideo”.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) has been his dream for a very long time so in each of these small, creative films, he articulated his wish to be able to compete in the Contest. Although the talented musician dreamed of becoming Germany’s candidate with his first self-produced song, he didn’t really think he would succeed.

Germany 2018: Michael Schulte - "You Let Me Walk Alone"

Germany is a grand old country in the Eurovision Song Contest. They have participated 63 times since the beginning of ESC in 1956. The only year Germany didn't participate was in 1996. Prior to the competition in 1996, 30 countries had signed up for participation, so EBU had to make a selection. Judges from the countries made a secret voting, where the 22 best qualified. During this voting, the judges only listen to but didn't watch the contestants. This turned out to be highly unpopular, and it was also the only time this method was used. The result of the voting was that Germany was ruled out. This was the first and only time Germany didn't participate in Eurovision Song Contest.
