Finland prepares for Eurovision 2023: Rules for UMK 2023 announced
Whoever is interested in representing Finland at Eurovision 2023 will be able to submit their potential entry from 1 to 5 September. The shortlisted songs will compete at UMK 2023
Finland's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was confirmed early by the country's public broadcaster, YLE.
Shortly after Kalush Orchestra's victory in Turin, the broadcaster confirmed the return of their national selection show, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, to decide on which artist and song should represent Finland at next year's Eurovision Song Contest.
The list of rules have been published on YLE's website. Amongst others, the regulation for the show does not limit the sign ups for only Finish citizens or for languages. Nonetheless, at least one songwriter and one lead singer must have Finnish citizenship or permanent residence in the country.
The submission period will be open from 1 until 5 September.
Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest
Finland debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961, and has participated ever since, except six years, mostly because of previous years' poor results.
The Finnish have won the competition once, in 2006, with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah," performed by Lordi. Since then, Finland's best result is a 6th place finish in 2021.
Since the introduction of the Semi-finals in 2004, Finland has qualified for the Grand Final 10 out of 18 times.
